An Evening by Phewa Lake

I live close enough to the lake that walking there stopped being an event and became a habit.

The boats come back in around six. The water flattens, the lanterns come on one at a time, and the mountains give up their outline slowly rather than all at once.

A useful kind of boredom

There is no notebook in this routine. I walk, I look, and by the time I turn back I usually know what the piece I have been struggling with is actually about.

Ideas are patient. They just dislike being stared at.
